artist statement

The idea that I am exploring is portraying crowds in an abstract way. All of my pieces have a circle-with-line shape, and this has grown to represent a figure or person to me.
In most of my pieces I include multiple people shapes to depict a crowd. A narrative or hidden story usually prompts my compositional choice. The story that I put into my piece might be hidden to the viewer's eye, but it has led me to discover variations in design/layout. For example, my piece that has the yellow 'person' gives the narrative of “going along with the crowd.” The figures on the sides are losing themselves and following the large middle figure and the yellow figure is carving its own path which is what we should be doing. Rhythm & repetition, size, color, foreground and background, which are all considerations when we organize a design, also often correspond to the way we organize ourselves as people. We too try to cluster, spread out or stand out, we also try to blend into our surroundings. It is this relationship that led me to the idea of using crowds to prompt the abstract compositions which make up my concentration.

Artist Statement: take 2

How do the pieces in your concentration reflect the exploration of this idea?

The idea that I am exploring is portraying crowds in an abstract way. I am also trying to tell a hidden story in each piece that I make. It is also using rhythm/repetition and flow. In each piece, there is a sense of repetition because there are multiple "people" in a line, or a cluster, that look alike.
